Magnificent Low Rider G Plan Teak Housemaster Chair and Footstool by K M Wilkins Circa 1970, retailed through Harrods and Heals in the1970s, this was one of the most iconic chairs of its age that captured the swinging ‘mid century’ mood perfectly. The seating position is low with a wonderful swivel acton and a slight rocking motion, these chairs were very expensive when new in the early to mid 1970s and were only available from1971 to 1976, this chair has a matching footstool to compliment it, the chair and stool have both been recovered in a beautiful ivory cotton and silk fabric, all internal cushion foams have been replaced with new fire compliant ones.
The Housemaster chair was designed by K.M.Wilkins who designed other upholstered furniture for G Plan such as the Saddle suite , but the Housemaster chair must be his most prominent design. The 1974 G Plan catalogue description read ” This exciting new concept in armchair design combines the newest advances in upholstery techniques with the luxury of a laminated, contoured frame veneered in handsome teak. The whole blissful creation is floated on a cradle of gleaming chrome-plated steel. The unique pentagonal base is specially designed to allow you to swivel a full 360 degrees, or gently rock to and fro, or just sit still – perfectly still “.
