Pierre Jeanneret Dining Table & Ten Chairs with Certificate by Jacques Dworczak 1954
Magnificent mid-century modern furniture design by Pierre Jeanneret, specifically the Model: PJ020112 Teak Rectangular Dining Table, also known as the "Committee Table," and a set of ten Model: PJ010803 Teak Armchairs, referred to as the ‘Committee Chair' hailing from Chandigarh, India, around the mid-20th century, during a period when Jeanneret collaborated closely with his cousin, the renowned architect Le Corbusier, on the comprehensive urban planning and architectural design of the city.
The Committee Table, crafted circa 1963-64, is a testament to skilled craftsmanship and design ingenuity, made from solid teak and teak veneer. Its rectangular top, constructed from thick veneer, is supported by a unique criss-crossed framework that slots into the base, secured firmly with nuts and bolts. The table stands on crossed legs that feature the signature ‘V’ motif—a design element frequently echoed in Le Corbusier's architectural and furniture designs, symbolizing strength and stability. This motif not only adds a decorative element but also reinforces the structural integrity of the table. The base is connected by two full-length stretchers, ensuring robust support. Original markings on the table edge and legs—K.U.K./LIB/T:12—attest to its historical and cultural significance, marking its original use and location.
Accompanying the table is a set of ten Committee Chairs, produced around 1953-54, showcasing a distinctive design with tall ‘Compass’ style legs that form an inverted ‘V’ shape. This design supports the armrests and features stuff-over "Roll" arm covers, marrying functionality with elegance. The chairs bear original markings under the back rail, indicating their provenance and adding to their authenticity.
This furniture set has undergone professional restoration, adhering to the highest standards to preserve its historical value and aesthetic appeal. Each piece comes with a comprehensive set of pre-restoration images and a certificate of authenticity, ensuring its legitimacy and value. The official certification by Jacques Dworczak adds an additional layer of provenance, making this set a coveted collectible.
The provenance of these pieces are deeply rooted in Chandigarh's history, with the table originating from the Assembly in Sector 1, and the chairs from the High Court, administrative buildings in Sector 1, and Panjab University in Sector 14. This connection to significant architectural landmarks in Chandigarh underscores the cultural and historical importance of the set, making it a remarkable addition to any collection.
