19th Century Victorian Colonial Anglo Indian Padouk Bookcase Circa 1890

Impressive 19th Century Victorian Colonial Anglo Indian Padouk Four Door Bookcase Circa 1890, the ornately carved cornice over a pair of arched glazed doors enclosing a single pull out shelf over two short drawers each with brass campaign handles, the base with a pair of glazed cupboard doors enclosing two shelves, raised on turned and reeded feet, the piece profusely carved allover with floral leaf design, a genuine statement piece.

Anglo-Indian Furniture
Used to describe furniture and furnishings made in India from the 18th century onwards by Indian cabinetmakers using local timbers and accessories, for the Colonial British market and wealthy locals, that was a fusion of the styles and techniques of the two cultures. Teak, Camphor wood, Padouk, Coromandel and Ebony were common timbers, the furniture was sometimes inlaid, and usually extensively carved with Indian themes including elephants and intricate foliate designs. Similar furniture was made in other colonies such as Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Kashmir.

Condition report: The bookcase is offered in excellent antique condition with minimal wear, there are no smells or odours, no evidence of past or present woodworm, the upper and lower door locks are missing which are easily replaceable, wonderful rich patina, this piece comes in two sections making moving easier.
