Antique Military Campaign Teak Chest of Drawers 19th Century Military circa 1890
Antique Military Campaign Teak Chest of Drawers 19th Century Military circa 1890 No: 50
A 19th century Anglo Indian military teak campaign chest of drawers circa 1890, the rectangular top over two short and three longer graduated drawers, all fitted with campaign brass recessed handles and brass escutcheons, raised on bun feet, the chest splits in two and comes with one non working key and tassel, this chest dates from the Victorian era.
The chest is in two sections for easy transportation. Chests that were constructed in the colonies, such as this one, were usually constructed of Camphor, Mahogany and Teak. The chest benefits from a rich golden Mahogany colour, with a wonderful grain configuration to the front and sides.
Mahogany, Camphor and Teak were used extensively for military chests because they had the advantage of only minimally expanding and contracting when exposed to extremes in temperature and humidity. Camphor is particularly resistant to woodworm, termites and other tropical infestations.
CONDITION REPORT: The chest is in excellent condition having just been fully restored. The top is flat with no significant marks or splits. It is of generally a good colour. All brass-work is original and present as are all of the locks and escutcheons. The drawers all open and close smoothly, there are no odours or smell. The chest is structurally sound with no evidence of any woodworm.
