Antique 19th century solid oak two door glazed bookcase or display cabinet, circa 1890, the rectangular top with Greek key motif over two glazed doors with beaded detail to the frames with two brass drop door pulls, three internal shelves, over four turned and carved feet with floral decoration, united by bobbin stretchers to front and sides and back, the side elevations of the cabinet with exquisite raised chinoiserie detail, the back of the cabinet with original solid oak plank boarding, a truly impressive piece of high quality and design, wonderful dark ebonised finished with excellent patina, a truly wonderful piece of Victoriana furniture at its best.
The Greek Key/meander motif took its name from the river Meander in ancient Greece (present day Turkey). The Meander was characterised by a very convoluted path. It became the most important symbol in Ancient Greece, symbolising infinity or the eternal flow of things.
This bookcase along with three others of similar design came from a large estate in Devizes, please see my other listings for further details.
This piece is offered in excellent antique condition, wear consistent with age and use, no signs of past or present woodworm, no odours or smell, no repairs, the doors open and close smoothly, original back panels, wonderful dark ebony patina.
