Military Campaign Secretaire chest of drawers Victorian 19th Century circa 1890, (Number 30) the two section chest with original flush mounted brass handles and original brass escutcheons. The upper section with a central secretaire with fall flap to writing desk with various pigeon holes and small pull out drawer, flanked by two short drawers over one long drawer, the lower section with two long drawers all raised on turned screw on feet, the drawers all hand-dovetailed, features its original backboards, brass corner protectors and strap work, comes with one working key with tassel.
The chest is in two sections for easy transportation. Chests that were constructed in the colonies, such as this one, were usually constructed of Camphor, Mahogany and Teak. The chest benefits from a rich golden teak colour, with a wonderful grain configuration to the front and sides.
Mahogany, Camphor and Teak were used extensively for military chests because they had the advantage of only minimally expanding and contracting when exposed to extremes in temperature and humidity. Camphor is particularly resistant to woodworm, termites and other tropical infestations.
Condition report: This military chest is offered in original condition, There are age related marks to the leading edges, top, sides and corners but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The chest features the original brass inset handles. All the hand dovetailed drawers open and close smoothly., original working locks with one working key, The chest retains its original turned feet, The chest has a wonderful rich golden teak patina, this item is extremely well made, solid in joint and ready to use, there are no odours or smells, there is no evidence of past or present woodworm, comes with one working key.
